The AMES
Story

A student-led association building the next generation of mechanical engineers at UMaT.

Who We Are

The Association of Mechanical Engineering Students (AMES) is the official student body for all Mechanical Engineering students at the University of Mines and Technology, Tarkwa. Founded in 2024, AMES serves as a bridge between classroom theory and industrial practice, organizing technical workshops, industrial visits, and networking events that prepare members for successful careers in mining, manufacturing, energy, and beyond.

From its inception, AMES has been driven by a clear mission: to create an environment where mechanical engineering students can grow technically, professionally, and personally. We believe that the best engineers aren't just technically competent — they're leaders, communicators, and community builders.

Our Mission

To promote academic excellence, professional development, and social cohesion among mechanical engineering students through hands-on learning, industry exposure, and community engagement.

Our Vision

To be the leading student engineering association in Ghana, producing well-rounded mechanical engineers who drive innovation and development across Africa.

Our Heritage

AMES was founded in 2024 by a group of passionate mechanical engineering students who recognized the gap between academic knowledge and industry readiness. With support from the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the UMaT administration, AMES has quickly grown into an association of over 300 members spanning all four year levels.

In our short history, we've organized over 50 events including technical workshops, industrial visits, career fairs, and community outreach programs. Our partnership network now includes over 10 industry organizations across the mining, manufacturing, and energy sectors.

What We Stand For

  • Excellence — We push ourselves and each other to be the best engineers we can be.
  • Community — Engineering is a team sport. We connect, support, and lift each other up.
  • Innovation — We believe in solving real problems with creative, practical solutions.
  • Service — We give back to the university and the wider Tarkwa community through outreach.
"AMES has been the single most impactful part of my university experience. The workshops, the industrial visits, the network — it's prepared me for the real world in ways the classroom alone never could." — AMES Member
